History of Twinning: Part 7

Lexington-Deauville 50th Anniversary Celebrations – in Deauville

In September of 2007, a 38-member delegation from Lexington visited Deauville, France to celebrate the 50th Anniversary.

The group began their visit by attending the Deauville American Film Festival.

They then ventured to visit the Bayeux Tapestry; and then the Normandy American Cemetery, where they placed flowers on Kentucky graves with elementary school students from Deauville.

As part of the official celebrations, Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry and Deauville Mayor Philippe Augier re-signed the Sister Cities charter agreement.

The chairman of the local horticulture club in Deauville, Claude Weinreich, and Philippe Behuet came up with the idea to create a special dahlia in honor of the 50th Anniversary.  Mr. Weinreich created the Lexington-Deauville dahlia.  The color is unique in design.

Only 100 bulbs were created, and they were split 50/50 between the cities.  Bulbs were sold in Lexington as part of a fundraiser for the anniversary celebrations.

A quilt project also took place.  Each of Deauville’s Sister Cities created a unique quilt to celebrate the 50th Anniversary, and the quilts were on display during a reception in Deauville.

We are excited to return to Deauville in September for the 60th Anniversary celebrations!
