Jim Amato: First trip to Deauville

In 1980, then-Mayor Jim Amato was the first Mayor of Lexington to take a delegation from Lexington to Deauville to strengthen the Sister Cities relations between the two cities.  Here are his remarks prior to their visit.

In these questionable times of international relations, it is reassuring to know that a certain kinship can remain between cities of similar concerns that supersedes the demands of politics and national interests. The Lexington-Deauville Sister Cities Project is such an example.
Deauville, France, a community somewhat smaller than Lexington on the Normandy Coast of the English Channel, is recognized as being the horse capitol of Europe.  With that distinction, and as a result of its stature within the horse industry, Deauville has long been compared to our community.  However, rather than competing for any particular distinction, the two communities have joined together in this Sister Cities project in an effort to utilize the resources of our people and our unique industry for mutual benefit.

Since 1957 when this bond was officially established, both communities have enjoyed the prestige and cultural advantages of this relationship. Over the past 23 years representatives and groups from both communities have traveled the Atlantic many times in visits that have solidified our friendship.  Only last year Lexington had the pleasure of honoring some twenty of our Deauville guests during their stay here. In recognition of their visit we honored them with a reception at the Opera House. During my welcoming address I promised those Deauville officials and residents that Lexington would soon return the visit by journeying to Deauville.

Within the past few days we have completed arrangements for our official visit to Deauville.
As part of the cultural exchange we have enjoyed with Deauville, Lexington will take along a 16 member soccer team to play a series of matches with Deauville soccer teams. In what truly serves as an example of the relationship that has developed between our two communities, these youths will be met in Paris by their hosts in Deauville and have been invited to stay in the homes of the people of Deauville.

We have established an excellent relationship with the people of Deauville and this trip will provide an opportunity to extend that good will.
A 35 member delegation will travel to Deauville in 9 days to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of twinning between Lexington and Deauville.
